Participant-observation has always been inculcated in my values ever since majoring in Anthropology. It is of being one with the people of a culture one is not brought up in, that makes one dive into an activity head first in order to familiarize oneself to it and understand it fully.

For the kindness of Peace Office and people from Yamabushi-cho, a few other foreigners and I were allowed to shoulder a Mikoshi. They also favourably lent us some happy (hah' pee) coats, which instantly turned me into festival mode as soon as I put it on.

This event was a highlight of my wonderful time in Japan. I had no idea how heavy an omikoshi was before carrying it but now I do not think that I will ever forget - my shoulders are still aching from the experience!

There is no doubt that once you are in Tokyo, there are some things that you ought to see that are strictly bound as a Tokyo specialty. One of them is the Sanja Festival.

Matsuri is definitely so attractive to foreigners. I was impressed to see people dancing and cheering in streets on I firstly day to Japan last summer. But it was somehow restricted to local people with certain community association organizing the whole function and distributing clothes and tools. As a result, the opportunity to dress in a Japanese way and participate in the famous Sanja matsuri with all those enthusiastic local people was such a wonderful and precious thing to me!

After seeing photo after photo of the Sanja Festival’s mikoshi carriers, I was ecstatic to find out that the Peace Office gave international students the rare opportunity to take part in the festival. Back home in Singapore, festivals of this grandeur are few and far between, and there is no such tradition as ‘mikoshi’.

A common impression people have on Tokyo is that Tokyo is a city without human warmth. After participating in the Sanjya Festival and carrying the mikoshi, I have denied this impression. A mikoshi is a portable Shinto shrine. During the Sanja Festival, three mikoshi circle around the Asakusa area bringing good luck to everyone.
